AMETHYST stands for:

Ambulatory Magneto-Enhancement of Transdermal High Yield Silver Therapy

The AMETHYST project was born out of an idea generated by Iain Elder of Pulse Medical Technologies Ltd. Coming from a background in producing medical devices for pain relief using Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) and through the extensive research the company undertook into PEMF for wound healing, it became apparent that there was a large unmet need to develop a innovative solution to increase the speed of healing for chronic leg ulcers.

An application was submitted to the EC for an FP7 grant and a consortium of companies and organisations was compiled across Europe with specific skill sets and capabilities to enable the research to be undertaken. In addition, the route to market was confirmed to ensure the developments that were being made would have a commercial value and return in the market place. The application was successful and full time research commenced in Swansea University January 2011 with four post doctorates together with their professors and supervisors.
